My 8x10 Camera Review

Roman Dachsel

For nearly five years now, my 8×10 Svedovsky camera has been a constant companion in my photographic work – and over time, it has proven itself to be an indispensable tool. Before I made the decision to go with this camera, I did a lot of research, comparing various field cameras and exploring different manufacturers. In the end, it was the Svedovsky that won me over with its thoughtful design, solid construction, and excellent value for money.

As a portrait photographer, the long bellows extension was a key factor for me. It allows for great flexibility not only in traditional portrait work, but also when shooting close-ups – an area where many other field cameras quickly reach their limits. The Svedovsky offers generous movements, precise adjustments, and is surprisingly intuitive to use.

In practice, the camera proves to be a true workhorse: robust, reliable, and perfectly suited for everyday use. I use it regularly and intensively – both in the studio and out in the field – and to this day, it performs flawlessly, just as it did on day one. Nothing wobbles, nothing sticks; everything is tight, stable, and built to handle the demands of 8×10-inch photographs. Despite its solid construction, I find the weight to be perfectly reasonable – especially considering the incredible stability it offers. You can immediately tell this camera is made for serious work.

In short: the 8×10 Svedovsky is much more than just a tool to me – it’s a trusted partner in my craft. If you’re looking for a dependable, well-built, and thoughtfully designed large format camera, this one delivers. A clear recommendation from my side.
